Tips to Prepare Your Backup Generator for Winter

Now is the right time to prepare your generator for the winter months as generators can develop several problems during this cold season. When the temperature drops, the particles of generator fuel can coalesce, making it difficult for you to operate the generator. If your generator has an electric starter, the batteries may lose cranking power.

Low oil shutdown sensors may experience problems in winter. Malfunctioning oil shutdown sensors will prevent the generator from starting.

Here are some tips to prepare your generator for winter.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Inspect Your Batteries[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1617918591719{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Before winter hits in full force, inspect your batteries to check whether the lead plates remain coated with sulfate. Make sure the breaker is closed. If it trips, reset it.

Check battery connections; clean and securely tighten them whenever required. To prevent corrosion, apply a battery saver to batteries regularly. If your batteries are on their last legs or have developed a significant problem, replace them.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Check Your Generator’s Fuel Levels[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1617918622535{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Make sure your portable generator has enough oil to keep it running. Check the oil level whenever you add fuel to your generator and top off if required. Add fuel stabilizer at least once a year. Always keep a few quarts of oil on hand and continue to check oil levels every 24-48 hours if the generator is running. Consider switching to winter-grade oil designed to reduce friction between different parts.

For permanently installed generators that are connected to natural gas, levels should be fine. For permanently installed generators running on propane, be sure to check your propane tank levels to ensure there is enough.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Inspect Replaceable Parts[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1617918667539{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Check your generator’s carburetor, fuel filter, spark plug, and air filter for dirt and damage. All You Wanted to Know About Battery Backup Systems

Power outages can be disastrous, especially if you have a sick person at home who uses an electricity-dependent medical device or assistive technology. If your area experiences frequent power outages, consider a solar battery backup in Sonoma County that will provide backup power when your regular power source fails.

There are several benefits of solar battery backups. A solar battery backup system can help you reduce your carbon footprint. When your solar panels produce more energy than you need, the excess energy is stored in your battery. The system utilizes this surplus energy to power your appliances during power outages.

Solar batteries are either AC or DC coupled. In an AC-coupled battery system, the solar inverter converts DC to AC, then a second inverter in the battery converts AC back to DC to be stored in the battery. During a grid power outage, the battery inverter converts DC back to AC to power your loads.

With a DC-coupled battery system, DC is produced by the solar panels and stored in the battery. During a grid power outage, the inverter converts DC to AC to power your loads. The federal government and many state governments currently provide incentives to homeowners for using solar battery backups. These incentives include federal tax credit and state and utility rebates.

The federal solar tax credit allows homeowners who install a solar energy system in 2021 to deduct 22 percent of the cost of installing the system from their federal taxes.

HILLSIDE GLAM

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This luxurious modern home was originally built in 2007 but destroyed by a devastating wildfire in 2017. The owners decided to rebuild using top-of-the-line lighting fixtures and controls. The home evokes Hollywood glamour in every room with touches of polished nickel, stainless steel, and glass. The 4-bedroom, 5-bathroom hillside home with a pool house features 33 Palladiom shades with T-Screen Charcoal/Charcoal 3% openness fabric. Most Palladiom shades are outside mount, utilizing satin nickel brackets and Palladiom hem bars. The customer loves how the darker fabric complements the light wall finishes while still preserving the view.

The home is also fitted with a Lutron QS lighting control system, providing management of all lights and motorized shades in the residence. This includes integration with landscape lighting via an FX Luminaire system for seamless timeclock events and control from inside the home. A Control4 automation system provides additional management of lighting control, motorized shading, and control of two media rooms with surround sound and multiple TVs. A waterproof iPad allows control of the outdoor lighting, the 16-speaker landscape audio system, and the outdoor TV.

VINEYARD ESTATE

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This beautiful vineyard home is a fire rebuild in Sonoma County, completed in late 2020. It features three Lutron shade models integrated with Lutron QS lighting control and a Control4 automation system. This estate includes solar power generation with a smart battery back-up, a guest house, a pool with a grotto, outdoor audio-video systems including landscape speakers, a game room, cove lighting, five TVs, a wine cellar, a chef’s kitchen, a snack kitchen downstairs, and multiple gas fireplaces.

During the initial design, Summit worked closely with the customer and the general contractor, Total Concepts, to create a user-friendly smart home. The customer’s requirements included media systems with two home theaters, house music throughout, future-proof low-voltage infrastructure, an enterprise-class wired and Wi-Fi network, Lutron QS lighting control with motorized shades, outdoor surveillance, an intrusion alarm with monitored smoke detection and sprinkler flow. All systems are integrated using Control4, including lighting control, motorized shades, alarm, surveillance, HVAC, and a backup battery system. All systems are managed via on-wall iPads when at home and iPhones when remote.

WINE COUNTRY UPGRADE

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This exquisite wine country compound was built in 1998 and has been featured in numerous renowned architectural publications. The estate boasts wine country vistas and provides multiple living areas, including a spacious 3,454 sq. ft. main residence, an airy 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom guest house with a fireplace and balcony, and a pool house with a full bathroom, steam shower, and wine cellar. The property also includes a spa, multiple patios, private verandas, and a bocce ball court with stunning views amidst mature oak trees. The interior features high exposed wood ceilings with dramatic uplighting.

When built, the property included the latest Lutron lighting control system with dual HW-MA-8-120 processors and Vario dimmers. The current owner purchased the property two years ago as a weekend retreat and rental property. Unfortunately, renters tended to leave multiple incandescent lights on when vacating the home, leading to high power bills. The customer attempted to manage costs by replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lamps but was disappointed to learn they flickered and did not work correctly with the vintage lighting control system. Summit recommended an upgrade to the Lutron QS lighting control system, replacing somewhat damaged Vario dimmers with elegant Maestro dimmers and SeeTouch keypads, paired with architectural wall plates to match the home’s comfortable style. Summit also installed solar to further reduce electricity bills.

ACCESSIBLE ACHIEVEMENT

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home was originally built in 1999 but was destroyed in the Tubbs Fire in 2017. The rebuild process took over two years, with Summit providing lighting control throughout the home and Control4 integration, primarily for improved accessibility for the customer. During the initial consultation, it was decided to further improve accessibility with the use of Lutron motorized shades. Other accessible features include exterior cameras, an easy-to-use alarm with smoke and sprinkler monitoring, an enterprise-class wired and Wi-Fi network with remote monitoring capabilities, and a front door video intercom with a remotely activated lock.

All the home’s systems are integrated using Control4, including three media systems, whole-house music, lighting control, motorized shades, alarm, surveillance, and a backup battery system. All systems are managed via a tabletop iPad when at home and iPhones when remote.

The Importance of Regular Electrical Service Panel Maintenance

Over time, the service panel may become corroded, or dust may settle on different components. Dust, debris, or loose connections can cause your electrical panel to malfunction, putting your business or home at risk for tripped circuit breakers and power outages. To steer clear of these issues, maintain your electrical service panel regularly.

Electrical contractors in Sonoma County recommend having the service panel inspected and maintained by a contractor at least once every three years.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Why Maintain Your Service Panel?[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602265966910{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Your electrical service panel is the central distribution point for delivering electricity from the utility company to switches, outlets, and appliances in your home. A faulty electrical panel will not just damage electrical appliances connected to it, but can also pose a safety hazard.
Breakers and lose wires can cause overheating. If you do not move quickly to address the problem, it will snowball into a major concern, and you may end up spending a ton of money on expensive repairs.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]What is Done During a Maintenance Session?[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602265989759{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]During a maintenance session, your electrician will check for signs of rust, wear and tear, and corrosion. The professional will clean the different components of your panel.
They will check all necessary connections and conduct a thermal check to detect high temperatures, one of the most common indicators of electrical problems.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Signs Your Electrical Service Panel Needs to Be Maintained or Replaced[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602270774692{margin-top: 24px !important;}"]

Frequent Panel Tripping Does your circuit breaker trip frequently? This can be an indicator that you are using more appliances than your circuit can accommodate. An electrical panel trips off to prevent the wires from overheating. If you are facing the problem, have your breaker replaced.
Flickering Lights If your lights flicker when household appliances are in use, there could be a connection problem. If an appliance operates but seems to have a diminished output, there is a possibility that your circuits are overloaded. This is an indicator that your panel is outdated and is unable to handle the load.
Burning Smell or Discolored Outlets If your service box has a poor connection, a huge amount of power will be generated in a small area. When the heat rises, you can smell burning. Overheating can cause your outlet to become discolored. This is a serious issue and requires immediate attention.

That’s almost 5 burglaries every minute! You or one of your family members can monitor different areas of your property when at home, but what happens when no one is home?A home security system allows you to keep an eye on your house from any part of the world. Most burglars look for an easy target, a property with no or minimum security. Installing a home security system is one of the most effective ways to deter burglars and intruders.

Modern security systems do more than just protecting homes. An advanced security system may include protection sensors designed to alert owners to safety risks such as carbon monoxide leaks or fire breakouts.

There are two ways to install a home security system – you can either take the DIY route or hire a home security system installer near you in Sonoma County. We advise against DIY security system installation. Some jobs are best left to the experts. Installing a security system is one of them.

How your home security system is installed has a major impact on its performance. One of the biggest perks of professional installation is greater assurance that your home security system will be installed correctly. Home security system installation companies employ knowledgeable experts who know everything there is to know about security systems. They use time-tested techniques to ensure flawless execution.

Why Install Outdoor AV

As temperatures soar, you will have numerous opportunities to entertain outside with BBQ parties, family gatherings, and outdoor parties. If you want to enhance the way you entertain in your outside living spaces, consider installing an outdoor audio and video system.

An outdoor AV system is a great long-term investment. Modern outdoor AVs are built to withstand the elements and can last for years. You will always have entertainment at hand even when you cannot leave your house.

When adding an AV system to your outdoor area, you do not have to change your decor. If you want widespread sound coverage, consider installing multiple landscape speakers throughout the backyard. Look for speakers that blend into the surroundings. Opt for compact and lightweight below-ground subwoofers.

Use in-wall and in-ceiling speakers designed to provide enveloping sound experience without consuming too much space. Look for wall mounts, special outdoor TV cabinets, and lifts to conceal large-screen TVs when they are not in use.

Another great reason to opt for an outdoor AV is to seamlessly integrate with your home’s automation and smart technologies. Look for an audiovisual installation company near you to integrate your AV equipment into your existing setup. With an integrated setup, you will be able to access streaming movies and music, vinyl records, the radio, and audiobooks from any area in your home.

4 Ways to Prepare for Public Safety Power Shutoffs

[vc_row row_height_percent="0" override_padding="yes" h_padding="3" top_padding="3" bottom_padding="3" back_color="color-xsdn" overlay_alpha="50" gutter_size="3" column_width_percent="100" shift_y="0" z_index="0"][vc_column column_width_percent="100" gutter_size="3" style="light" overlay_alpha="50" shift_x="0" shift_y="0" shift_y_down="0" z_index="0" medium_width="0" mobile_width="0"][vc_column_text]Utility companies can turn off power during extreme weather. This is done to ensure public safety. Some common conditions that can lead to power shutoff are low humidity and high-speed winds. Power to high-risk areas such as those with dry vegetation is usually cut first.

If your utility company assesses a public safety risk, it will notify you and other residents in your area before shutting off power. A power outage can last from a few hours to several days. You need to set up an emergency plan that can help tackle safety risks and steer clear of inconvenience during power shutoffs.

Here are some tips to prepare for power shutoffs:[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Update Contact Information[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602269114282{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]If you have recently changed your number or email address, make sure your utility company has your updated contact details. A power outage can render electricity-dependent devices such as your laptop useless; which means you won’t be able to access any data (including important contact info) saved on those devices. If your phone battery dies, you won’t be able to call anyone.

To reduce dependency on technology, create a backup. Write down important phone numbers on a piece of paper. Make sure everyone has a copy.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Conduct Drills to Check Preparedness[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602269056209{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Conduct drills to check the preparedness level of your family members. Family members who drive should be able to open the garage door manually. Make sure everyone knows where they have to go if they can’t stay at home. Using the paste URLs function of the Bulk Backlinks Checker, you may examine the backlink counts for up to 400 URLs.

Solar panels are an eco-conscious choice that helps save the environment and lessen your dependence on traditional electricity.

It is estimated that around 81 percent of the total energy consumed in the U.S. comes from fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal. If you want to contribute to sustainability, you need to decrease your dependency on energy produced by burning fossil fuels. You can achieve this objective by installing a solar panel.

A solar panel harnesses the sun’s energy, which is free and abundant. Your solar panel will not just benefit the environment, but also keep your pocket happy and enable you to keep the power on during planned and unplanned power outages.

Installing a solar panel is a major decision. In addition to committing upfront funds, you may also have to make changes to your property. Before you hire a solar company near you for solar panel installation, remember to seek answers to these questions.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]What is the Condition of Your Roof?[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602269717504{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Your solar panel will increase the amount of weight on your roof. If your roof’s structural integrity is compromised, address the problem before starting your solar panel installation project. If your roof is damaged or is nearing the end of its service life, repair or replace it.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Is Your Home Energy Efficient?[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602269670585{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]If you live in an old home with inadequate insulation or you use an old HVAC, consider making energy-efficient improvements before installing solar panels. This can be a problem as wireless networks use radio waves. They have limited range and are unable to penetrate walls.

If it's feasible, move your router to a more central location. This can be done by running a longer coax or ethernet cable. Keep your router away from refrigerators, microwave ovens, and other metal equipment. If you have a fish tank, move your router as far from it as possible, as Wi-Fi signals can struggle to pass through water. Quick & Easy Energy-Saving Tips

[vc_row row_height_percent="0" override_padding="yes" h_padding="3" top_padding="3" bottom_padding="3" back_color="color-xsdn" overlay_alpha="50" gutter_size="3" column_width_percent="100" shift_y="0" z_index="0"][vc_column column_width_percent="100" gutter_size="3" style="light" overlay_alpha="50" shift_x="0" shift_y="0" shift_y_down="0" z_index="0" medium_width="0" mobile_width="0"][vc_column_text]A few small changes in everyday life can help you save dramatically on your power. These changes do not cost a dime, but they can add up to real-time energy savings over time. Listed below are a few tips from expert electrical contractors in Sonoma County that you can try to save energy, save money, and reduce your family’s impact on the environment.

1) Turn Off Fans When You Exit a RoomThis is a no-brainer. Fans do not work like air conditioners in that they do not cool a room. Fans blow still air, which often feels cool across your skin. In fact, the motor on your fans adds more heat to the room, making it sensible for you to turn it off when you leave a room.

How to do so? As with the lights and electronics, when you leave a room, be sure to turn off the fan too. This not only helps save energy but also sets a good example for the younger generation to follow.

2) Drop Window Shades and Close Drapes During DaytimeWhen you drop the window shades during the day, it helps keep the sunlight out and thus cools the house considerably. During winter, doing the reverse would help let sunshine seep in.

How to do so? Moving your furniture around each season will not only give your house a new look but also is a neat way to take advantage of the sun or to avoid the sun. For instance, setting a table by a large French window makes way for a cozy spot to enjoy your breakfast on a chilly winter day.

3) Wash and Rinse Your Clothes in Cold WaterMost Americans are unaware of the fact that 90% of the energy that is used to wash clothes is in fact toward heating water.

The Energy Storage Path to a Clean California

[vc_row row_height_percent="0" override_padding="yes" h_padding="3" top_padding="3" bottom_padding="3" back_color="color-xsdn" overlay_alpha="50" gutter_size="3" column_width_percent="100" shift_y="0" z_index="0"][vc_column column_width_percent="100" gutter_size="3" style="light" overlay_alpha="50" shift_x="0" shift_y="0" shift_y_down="0" z_index="0" medium_width="0" mobile_width="0"][vc_column_text]Like most parts of the US, California’s energy industry has been in a constant state of transformation. This has been catalyzed by a dramatic increase in clean energy owing to multitude of technological innovations. The state has been in the limelight for its efforts in increasing the storage and use of renewable energy so as to meet climate goals.

Pacific Gas & Electric has joined hands with the state in its many efforts to bring down greenhouse emissions and fight climate change. While the Trump administration decided to roll back its efforts to combat climate change, California has a different take and is actively fighting global warming.

In an effort to make this a reality, the Governor of California also signed a new climate change law. This bill requires that at least 50% of the state’s electricity will be powered by renewable resources by the year 2025 and at about 60% by the year 2030. California strives hard to achieve its goal of entirely relying on zero emission energy sources for all its electricity needs by the year 2045. It also hopes to achieve carbon neutrality, which means that it is looking for ways to remove as much carbon dioxide from its atmosphere that it emits, by the very same year. This is not going to be easy and will not be immediate, but it is something they intend to achieve.

California is not alone in this pursuit. Hawaii too has established the same ambitious goal of 10% renewable electricity by the time 2045 rears its head.

While this may seem like a goal that is hard to achieve, energy storage systems can help achieve this as could a well-connected transmission grid. In fact, many cities across the US have already attained 100% renewable electricity. This includes Burlington, Vermont; Aspen, Colorado; and Georgetown in Texas.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text text_lead="yes"]It is time that each of us take a small step toward shifting to renewable energy and to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. If you are keen on reducing carbon footprint, and are looking for renewable energy companies in Petaluma, look no further than Summit Technology Group. We possess a wealth of knowledge about renewable energy systems for not just homes, but also for businesses. Call us today at 707-542-4773 for more details.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Battery Storage: The Next Disruptive Technology in the Power Sector

It is an exciting time for the power sector. The sector is witnessing the advent of several emerging and disruptive technologies that are transforming it for the better. The latest disruptive technology to take the power sector by storm is battery storage. Low-cost battery storage has become a reality in the modern times. This has happened primarily due to the growing demand for electric vehicles and consumer markets. Players in Europe, Asia, and the United States are scaling the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries so that they can serve their target markets better. Today, the price of battery storage is under $230 per kilowatt-hour, which is a substantial reduction considering that the price was $1,000 just a few years ago.

With the reduction in battery storage in Santa Rosa and other areas, energy markets are making a shift from niche usage to broader uses, like integrating renewable, providing quality services, and replacing conventional power generators to ensure more reliability. In the US, many households now have solar panels that allow them to generate their own energy and meet their needs. However, the surplus is often exported to the main grid. Thanks to battery storage, they no longer have to worry about surplus electricity production. They can store any surplus and utilize it on demand. Hence, the demand for battery storage is increasing among customers, and research shows that this market will continue growing, especially in high-cost markets. The demand for battery storage will increase in the coming years in areas with frequent public safety power shutoffs from PG&E. A public safety power shutoff (PSPS) can last for days. Having battery storage would mean you’d never have to go without power during a PSPS. It is possible to install battery storage at the grid as well as at the customer’s business or home. The cost of deploying this technology is dependent on the type of customer, regulations, type of application, needs of the grid, and the customer’s load. Nonetheless, it is poised to revolutionize the utility industry.

Battery storage is quite flexible, and can create value streams that will grow by leaps and bounds, and benefit the industry when properly deployed and scaled. While research shows that battery storage will be a challenge for utilities positioned behind the meter, it will offer an advantageous opportunity to utilities that are in front of the meter.

Already the utility industry is up against cheap solar energy, and this industry will face further disruption with cheap storage options. When electricity generated can be easily stored, it will have an impact on utility rates wherever these battery storage options are used.
